The Spanish goalkeeper leaves Old Trafford after 12 years with the Red Devils

At the end of the 2010/2011 season, Man Utd legendary goalkeeper, Edwin Vander Saar was retiring and the club needed a new Number 1.

Unfortunately, 27 years old Anders Lindegaard and 29-year old Tomasz Kuszczak, both backups to the retiring Dutchman had been deemed not up to the standard required for the number 1 spot at Old Trafford.

So Man Utd went and brought in a tiny, inexperienced 20-year old, David DeGea from La Liga, Spain to a highly physical league like the English Premier League. The Shelled out £18.9 million for him - the highest fee ever paid for a goalkeeper in English football as at the time.

The criticisms made sense. Either of Lindegaard or Kuszczak with their EPL experience could have been a better choice while Man Utd looked for a more experienced goalkeeper with international experience.

When DeGea took to the field, he got battered. Bullied. Let in silly goals and opposition and even some Man Utd fans started the name-calling. It was a horrible start to life at Old Trafford.

However, the man who signed him, Sir Alex Ferguson kept the faith. In DeGea's early days of struggling, he backed him and gave him the needed confidence to grow. Sir Alex, even famously told him "Welcome to English Football" when he got battered.

And the boy came through. Became United's saviour too many times to count and went on to become an absolute club legend with 190 clean sheets, the highest by a goalkeeper in Man United's 145-year history.  Casimero in his tweet was on hand to echo this;

He's seen the best managers and players come and go. Played with some of man United's best. Played with Vidic, Ferdinand, Evra, Carrick, Scholes, Giggs, Ji Sung Park, Rooney, Berbatov, Owen, Kagawa, Nani, Van Persie, Chicarito and many other talented guys.

12 years later as he leaves, he's proven the doubters wrong and leaves with his head held high. It's hard not to feel emotional about his departure and the terrible way the people at Manchester United handled it. The fans and followers of De gea and Man Utd shared their opinion.

DeGea, despite his struggles last season, carried Man Utd for years, even under Sir Alex and deserves a better goodbye. Sid merchant shared the same sentiment in his tweet;
